My father has been baking and cooking all of his life. He began working in a local bakery when he was just 14 years old. In all, he spent over 50 years baking breads, cakes, pies, cookies, pastries, and other delicious desserts. His years of baking put him in the heart of blue collar America, working hard so that he could give his kids (me, my brother, and my sister) a better life than his own humble upbringing, which he did. The art of old, traditional baking in immigrant neighborhoods of the east coast has almost disappeared since my dad's beginnings...By the time he retired there were only a few small bakeries left that made things from scratch. My dad was also a superb cook. I remember well when we were kids how he would make delicious balanced meals. He even had a talent for going into the frig and using whatever was there to whip up a tasty dinner. Sixty years later, his grandson, Rukai, looks like he has the same talent for cooking and baking...He often helps Komaki and I in the kitchen, but his favorite is to make his own recipes without any help...This includes a variety of pots and pans, whatever vegetables he can sneak past us, water, and a couple bottles of spices...In the end he comes up with his own "cold" soup concoction, which of course we have to drink! I truly look forward to the day when Rukai and his Grandpa can bake a batch of cookies together and then sit down and enjoy them with a glass of milk...Thanks dad!
